A few words on Renée’s writing and editing service
You can count on me to treat your project with care. I’m a persuasive writer, driven by research and curiosity. I’m a careful editor committed to accuracy. The bottom line: I’ll treat your words with respect as I help you craft engaging stories that serve your audience. I base my rates on those of the Editorial Freelancers Association. Note that the standard page is 250 words, or about one page, double-spaced.

Editing
Let’s talk about your expectations for editing. People often use the terms “copy edit” and “proofreading” interchangeably. In practice, they are two different skills. We’ll both be happier if we discuss what kind of editing your project needs before we begin. We should, as they say, define our terms.
In the broadest kind of editing — developmental editing sometimes called content or substantive editing), I look at your manuscript’s structure and flow. Does the story/article/report/book hold together? Is it organized in a way that makes sense to the reader? Do the pace and voice work? Is it accurate and clear? In a developmental edit, I look at the big picture and offer broad suggestions rather than fix spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Content editing (sometimes called line editing) involves a close look at your manuscript, line by line. Is your writing clear, accurate and consistent? Can a different word make the point in a better way? Does your manuscript follow appropriate style for the outlet or niche? I’ll make specific suggestions to improve the flow and readability of your manuscript.
If you need a final, fresh set of eyes on your manuscript AFTER an editor has reviewed your project? That’s proofreading. I look for misspelled and incorrect words, punctuation and grammar goofs, and layout/formatting errors. Proofreading may involve reviewing a final proof of a page or comparing a proof to a previous draft or source. Note that most professionals do not proofread a manuscript they edited.
